Charles Turner

Charles “Chuck” Turner passed away Monday, March 7, 2016 in Surprise, Arizona, he was 79 years old.

Chuck was born in Maxwell, Iowa on October 24, 1936 to Charles and Hazel Turner. He graduated from Colo High School in 1955, then served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1959. He was able to travel and see the world during his service. Upon his return he married Joan McDaniel in Iowa and they moved to Aurora, Colorado in 1959 where he worked in the Gambles’ Hardware store.

In 1965 they moved to Strasburg, Colorado where Chuck eventually opened and owned his own Gambles Hardware store, now known as Western Hardware. As a valued member of the community he was on the Strasburg Recreation District board and also a volunteer on the Strasburg Fire Department where he helped many people in need and was know to be a speedy and efficient driver.

His passion was the real estate business as he founded his own company, Look East Realty, in 1972. He pursued this life’s ambition of buying, selling, trading and developing real estate in the 1-70 corridor for 35 years. He regarded the Commanche Crossing Subdivision south of Strasburg to be his most significant development. Anyone who knew Chuck, knew he was an ambitious and hardworking person who continually pursued his next big deal.

Chuck was a proud father of three children, Todd Turner, Troy Turner, Tia Turner and husband Jim King, and four grandchildren Wesley Turner, Kristi Turner, Tara King and Trista King. They spent many happy times together playing games, camping and cheering for the Broncos.

In 1992, he married Pat (Castle) Tapparo, who brought two more children into his life; Randy and Kenny. Chuck and Pat moved to an old farm house north of Strasburg which they refurbished. During that time, Chuck was diagnosed with COPD and suffered a heart attack. Chuck and Patsy sold their farm house in 2006 and moved into the town of Strasburg.

In 2000, Chuck and Patsy purchased a home in Surprize, Arizona and became snow birds. In 2010 they permanently moved to Arizona. Chuck fulfilled his lifelong dream of living the Arizona lifestyle, which originated from a distant aunt who told magnificent stories of the state. They also were able to travel the United States, and take cruises to New Zealand, Australia, and Central America, passing through the Panama Canal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Forrest, Francis and Bob, and four sisters; Jenny, Mable, Katherine, and Dorris Ann.

There will be a grave-side service in Bennett, Colorado at a later date. He will be missed.

  8. To All of Chuck’s Family, I am sorry to see this news. I would like to say how important Chuck was in my life, as he was a mentor and friend to me in my early business career. Although we had lost contact over the years, I have many fond memories of Chuck and his family.

  9. I heard Chucks health had declined in recent years. I was so surprised, I can only remember him as a man full of energy and ambitions. He was instrumental in helping us sell our house and buy one in the “5 acres” as it was called then. He definitely made some differences in the town of Strasburg.
My condolences to all of the family members.

  15. So sorry to learn of Chucks passing.
He certainly was involved with Strasburg. I think he sponsored every thing that involved kids. Little league, Bowling, The Year Book, ect.
He was also a Businessman way before the time. He had a Telephone in his pick up way before we even knew what cell phones were.
As many of you have said he was always looking for the next Deal.
I will always remember his smile and his quick wave as he drove that Chevy Pick up down the dusty roads of Eastern Colorado.
I will be keeping his Family in my Prayers.

  17. Many of my fondest memories of Chuck involve family, a table, and a deck of cards (or a monopoly board, after all he did love his real estate)! He brought the same energy and passion in life to the game table and I will always remember the sparkle in his eye and his enthusiastic laugh. He loved getting the better of you at a hand of cards, but would also grin just as big when you got your lick in too. They were games to be sure, but also times full of sharing, family, laughter, and love.

I also remember other times, around different tables, talking economics or politics, and while we might not always have agreed, I will always have the utmost respect for his keen insight and willingness to truly listen.

Chuck, you raised an amazing family, and you will be missed by us all…
