Donald “Butch” Dean Zimmerly

Butch Zimmerly, 60, passed peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, May 14th, at his home in Surprise, Arizona. Born and raised in Baraboo, WI, he helped raise 3 children. Later in life, he lived in Tomah, WI before moving to Arizona to enjoy his retirement, after 33 years of service in the Army.

Butch joined the military at the young age of 17, and climbed his way up to the rank of First Sergeant, while also working in other occupations throughout the years, such as volunteer firefighter for Baraboo Fire Department, along with holding a career as a Chimney Sweep. During his military service, he was involved in the National Guard’s Counterdrug Program, and their traveling Ropes course. Butch served two tours of combat duty overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2014, he was honorably discharged due to medical reasons beyond his control.

Butch was a loving father and a great friend, who wore his heart on his sleeve and believed in serving others. Whether he was giving up his own fishing lures to anybody who needs one, or plowing snow off of every neighbor’s sidewalk on his block, he was always willing to give a helping hand to anyone in need. He was an avid fisherman and an all-around outdoorsman. He spent a lot of time up North at his camper, where he enjoyed four-wheeling, fishing, and relaxing around the fire with his friends and family. On March 29, 2013, he and his wife Carrie (Cross) were happily married. After retiring and moving to Surprise, Arizona, he and Carrie enjoyed taking sight-seeing road trips and stopping at places along the way.

Butch is survived by his wife Carrie Zimmerly, and his faithful dog Beau-zee. Three children: Jacob (Angela) Zimmerly, Janesville; James (Azure) Burdick, Racine; Katelyn (Schuyler) Romberg, Baraboo.
